George and Amal Clooney have revealed why they gave their twins traditional names, rather than "meaningless, ridiculous Hollywood" ones.

The 56-year-old actor said that he and human rights lawyer Amal—who named their three-month-old twins Ella and Alexander—wanted to give their offspring "a break" from the pressure and scrutiny of being born to famous parents.

"[We] didn't want to give them one of those ridiculous Hollywood names that don't mean anything," the Suburbicon director told Paris Match.

"They'll already have enough difficulty bearing the weight of their celebrity."

Previously, Clooney claimed there was "no great inspiration" behind their choice of "normal" names, telling Entertainment Tonight: "We figured these kids are going to be looked at a lot and watched and [have their] every move sort of judged, and we wanted them to at least have a break with the name.

"So we looked for some sort of normal names. We didn't have any great inspiration. It wasn't Alexander the Great and Ella Fitzgerald."

He also said the babies have their very own distinct personalities, with Ella taking after Amal's elegance.

"She's [Ella] very elegant and all eyes, Clooney disclosed to ET at the Venice Film Festival last week. "Alexander is a thug already. He's a moose! Literally, he just sits and he eats."

He also added it was only when the twins entered the world that the prospect of fatherhood began to sink in.

"I suppose [the realest moment is] just the minute they came out," the star reflected.

"None of it is real until all of a sudden they're standing there covered in slime and crying. You're like, wait a minute, what is that? We were just two and now we're four.

"Everything changes pretty quickly."
