Kate Winslet has recalled falling for her husband as they escaped a catastrophic house fire on Necker Island.

The actress and her children were staying with Sir Richard Branson in his luxury villa on his privately owned 74-acre island when it was struck by lightning and battered by winds caused by Hurricane Irene back in 2011.

Winslet recounts running out of the property with just a bra, her passports and children, but Branson's nephew and now-partner Ned Rocknroll helped them to safety with a "head torch".

"I met my husband in a house fire," the Reader star told ET. "I took a bra and passports and my children.

"So I married him! I was like, 'I'll go for the guy with a head torch!'"

Shortly after the blaze, Branson informed the media: "Around 20 people were in the house and they all managed to get out and they are all fine."

Meanwhile, Winslet has been promoting her upcoming drama The Mountain Between Us opposite Idris Elba, which follows the pair as they fall in love after surviving a plane crash

Speaking about the tough conditions they endured during filming, she continued: "[We filmed it] at 10,000 feet and our coldest temperatures were negative-38.

"There were days when we would get to work and I would actually be a little bit afraid about what was gonna happen to us when we got out of that car, just because it was so cold."

The film centres on Winslet and Idris's characters attempting to stay alive in the unforgiving wilderness following the accident, and forming a bond as they attempt to find help.

"It evolved and it changed and there were things that we did that were nowhere to be found actually on paper," Winslet went on, as she admitted that falling in love under such extreme circumstances "wasn't even a question to me".

"[I never though] this wasn't believable because it had actually happened in my own life," she reflected.

Winslet and Rocknroll - born Ned Abel Smith - married in 2012, and welcomed their first child together Bear Blaze in 2013.

Meanwhile, Branson has shared images of the destruction on Necker Island following hurricane Irma, and appealed for aid for the devastated British Virgin Islands.

The billionaire entrepreneur is also using his Virgin Unite foundation to coordinate raising money for longer-term reconstruction projects for the local BVI communities.
