Last week, Fergie and Josh Duhamel announced they were separating after eight years of marriage. The announcement was a shock to fans, but their statement noted they separated "earlier this year" and reports claimed the split was in the works for a while.

The two apparently kept their separation private at first so they could adjust on their own time. But Fergie says it just got too uncomfortable to keep answering questions about their first date over and over again, so they had to get the news out there.

"Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions," she told People. "We're great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird. There's no perfect time so we just decided to [announce] it."

At this point, Fergie said she and Josh are focusing on coparenting their 4-year-old son, Axl. Fergie is also promoting Double Duchess, her first new album since 2006, so she'll have a whole new set of questions to answer while promoting it. But at least she won't have to make up answers about a relationship that no longer exists.
