Jimmy Kimmel broke down in tears as he spoke about the mass shooting in Las Vegas during his talk show on Monday night.

The television host, who grew up in the Nevada city, was choked up as he began his regular monologue by paying tribute to the 59 people who lost their lives and hundreds who were wounded when a gunman opened fire on crowds at a country music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

"This morning we have children without parents, fathers without sons, mothers without daughters," he said. "We lost police officers, a nurse from Tennessee, a special ed teacher from a local school here in Manhattan beach. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to throw up or give up . It's too much to even process."

Kimmel then turned his speech into an impassioned rally for tighter gun laws in the United States, questioning why action is taken after every other type of tragedy or instance of terrorism in the country yet this isn't the case when it comes to guns.

"I've been reading comments that say 'This is terrible, but there's nothing we can do about it'. I disagree with that intensely," he said regaining his composure. "Of course there's something we can do about it. There are a lot of things we can do about it but we don't which is interesting because when someone with a beard attacks us we tap phones, we invoke travel bans, we build walls and take every possible precaution to make sure it never happens again.

"But when an American buys a gun and kills other Americans then there's nothing we can do about that."

He then went on to show the faces of 56 senators who voted against closing loopholes that allow people to buy weapons without background checks.

"What I'm talking about tonight isn't about gun control, it's about common sense," he added. "Common sense says no good will ever come from allowing a person to have weapons which can take down 527 Americans at a concert."
