Brooke Shields has opened up about the time that Donald Trump tried to chat her up, and more specifically the punishing line that he used on her.

His romantic proposal happened nearly two decades ago after he had legally separated from his second wife, Marla Marples.

"I was on location doing a movie and he called me right after he gotten a divorce,' said Shields on US chat show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

"And he said, "I really think we should date because you're America's sweetheart and I'm America's richest man and the people would love it.'"

Unsurprisingly, his poetic words didn't work and Shields politely declined.

"I have a boyfriend, he's not going to be happy about it," she said.

Shields isn't the first high-profile woman Trump attempted to charm - Emma Thompson and Salma Hayek both had similar stories of his wooing. After Hayek told the now president she had a boyfriend, he replied in a somewhat needy fashion: "He's not important. He's not big enough for you; you have to go out with me."
