You're probably familiar with the too-weird-to-be-true story of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, but a new red-band trailer for I, Tonya just dropped as a reminder that you probably don't know the half of it.

Directed by Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie, the film tracks the unexpected rise of figure skater Tonya Harding (Robbie) to "best figure skater in the world (at one point in time)"—and her spectacular fall from grace after ex-husband (Sebastian Stan) orchestrates an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan to "even the playing field."

The film posits Harding as an aspiring star with a less-than-wholesome image and an abusive, chain-smoking mother (Allison Janney, unrecognizable in a role she seems born for) who bullies her daughter to greatness through violence and a foul mouth. "I made you a champion knowing you'd hate me for it," she tells her now-grown daughter. "That's the sacrifice a mother makes."

Harding is an unreliable narrator from the first frame, with her voiceover explaining, "there's no such thing as truth—everyone has their own truth." When she aims a shotgun at her husband, she looks straight into the camera: "I never did this." Her naivety suggests she's a victim of her mother and husband's manipulations and hones in on her unorthodox upbringing; when someone tries to give Harding advice about the media, she reminds him, "I don't have a wholesome American family." Later, a judging panel withholds a perfect score due to "presentation" and Harding tells them to "suck my dick." The 2:26 trailer is a wild ride—one we can't wait to experience as a feature.
