'Amadou Sumaila' by César Dezfuli

The Spanish photographer César Dezfuli has been awarded the Tenth Anniversary Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2017 for his portrait of a migrant rescued in the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast.

Dezfuli was named the winner at a ceremony held last night at the National Portrait Gallery, with judges commenting that the portrait of the 16-year-old Amadou Sumaila "powerfully conveys his loss, solitude and determination" at at time when the refugee crisis remains as severe as ever.

Crowned the runner-up was the Welsh photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith, who captured her poignant image of a girl fleeing ISIS in Mosul, Iraq, while on a commission for Oxfam. Finland's Maija Tammi was awarded the third prize for her intriguingly titled portrait One of Them Is a Human #1, which depicts a Japanese android called Erica who has been programmed to respond to questions and express emotions.

The three winning portraits, which were judged anonymously from a total of 5,717 submissions, are on show as part of an exhibition that opens tomorrow at the National Portrait Gallery. The diversity of work on display is impressive and includes pieces by some of Bazaar's own contributing photographers: look out for Tom Craig's portrait of the late AA Gill and Harry Cory Wright's image of the artist (and former Bazaar Woman of the Year) Maggi Hambling.

'There is an interesting duality to the picture; smoking to the point of absurdity within the strong pastoral flavour of a ripe orchard. That's Maggi,' says Cory Wright of his portrait.

The show also features an In Focus display of previously unseen prints by the American photographer Todd Hido, whose body of work includes both evocative landscapes and portraits of women.

The exhibition runs from 16 November to 8 February 2018 at the National Portrait Gallery.
