Author JK Rowling has been made a Companion of Honour by Buckingham Palace.

Rowling was presented with the honour by the Duke of Cambridge earlier today (December 12) in light of her services to literature and philanthropy. (And magic, of course.)

In a statement, JK said that she was "deeply honoured and proud" to receive the rare accolade, which is awarded to a limited number of people.

"To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honour, especially as a female writer, is a particular privilege," she added.

Rowling wore a navy dress coat with matching heels and fascinator to accept her medal, showing off her new brunette hair colour in the process.

The Harry Potter creator has now joined the likes of Stephen Hawking, Sir David Attenborough, Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Ian McKellen in receiving the award - so it's safe to say she's in good company.

Rowling first received an OBE back in 2001. It was also reported today that a biopic based on the best-selling author could be in the works - so we're sure this milestone achievement will feature.
