Andrew Garfield has opened up about his recreational drug use, giving an incredibly frank interview to ES Magazine. The actor confessed that he smokes weed and takes hallucinogens, but only in certain situations.

"Drugs – the word has such a stigma," Garfield said. "I can only really take substances if it's a ritual. I mean, weed, I can smoke because it's just nice. But with hallucinogens, I have to do it in a very conscious way in a place where I feel free and safe and can have a freak out if I want to. I want to be able to express my insights."

It is not the first time that Garfield has spoken about his tendency to take drugs. The actor opened up about eating weed brownies before a trip to Disneyland for his birthday with a group of friends, including then girlfriend Emma Stone.

"My 29th birthday, weirdly," Garfield told W Magazine about which was his favourite birthday. "It was perfect. It was heaven. I was with my favourite people in the world, eight of my closest friends. And, um, I'm just gonna tell you this straight up. They came out to L.A. to surprise me and we went to Disneyland and we ate pot brownies. And it was literally heaven."

In his most recent interview, Garfield also opened up about working with Claire Foy and why he finds some social situations terrifying in the interview, which appears in this week's Theatre Awards issue of ES Magazine, out today.
