The BAFTA Rising Star Award nominations have been announced, celebrating those who have shown outstanding talent on the big screen in the past year.

Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya, Josh O'Connor, Florence Pugh and Tessa Thompson are all nominated for the prestigious prize, which is in its 13th year of running.

They were all selected by a judging panel of leading industry specialists and entertainment journalists, including film broadcaster Edith Bowman, actress Georgina Campbell and casting director Lucy Bevan.

Timothée Chalamet was praised for his leading performance in Call Me By Your Name, which has been labelled a triumph by film critics, along with his role in comedy-drama Lady Bird.

Daniel Kaluuya shot to fame last year in the American film, Get Out, where he won an MTV Movie Award. He's also been nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and Gotham Award for Best Actor.

Last year, Josh O'Connor was named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit. He made his big-screen debut in The Riot Club and has also starred in hit period TV drama Peaky Blinders.

Florence Pugh's performance in Lady Macbeth not only earned her critical acclaim but also led to her being named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and winning a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit last year. She made her debut in The Falling, where she received a nomination for Best Newcomer at the BFI London Film Festival Awards.

Tessa Thompson is currently starring as the female lead in the third film of the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok. Her career took off following the film Dear White People where she won a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor. Her place as a star in Hollywood was solidified by her performance in Creed, where she starred opposite Sylvester Stallone.

Edith Bowman, award juror, said: "Announcing this year's nominees has been an extraordinary experience."

The winner will be announced on 18 February 2018 at the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony. Voting is now open to the public at ee.co.uk/BAFTA.
