The internet is freaking over excerpts published from journalist Michael Wolff's new book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, which provides an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the first year of Donald Trump's presidency. In the 24 hours since the first excerpt was published in the Daily Intelligencer, Trump has bashed and renounced Steve Bannon, sicced his lawyers on the publisher seeking to stop the book's release, and threatened to sue Bannon as well.

Though there's plenty of disturbing content in the excerpts, what may be most unsettling are the several bombshells about Trump and Melania's relationship. A few of them below:

1. Melania (and the entire Trump family, including Trump himself) was convinced he would lose. She'd "been assured by her husband that he wouldn't become president, [and] could [then] return to inconspicuously lunching. Losing would work out for everybody. Losing was winning."

2. She was heartbroken when he didn't: "Shortly after 8 p.m. on Election Night, when the unexpected trend—Trump might actually win—seemed confirmed, Don Jr. told a friend that his father, or DJT, as he calls him, looked as if he had seen a ghost. Melania was in tears—and not of joy."

3. The new First Lady was, in fact, miserable on Inauguration Day. Though this isn't new information (her obvious distress was constantly reported on during the entire weekend) Wolff writes Trump did not enjoy the inauguration either. "He was angry that A-level stars had snubbed the event, disgruntled with the accommodations at Blair House, and visibly fighting with his wife, who seemed on the verge of tears."

4. The pair has been sleeping in separate bedrooms, which is more significant than one would think. "Trump, in fact, found the White House to be vexing and even a little scary. He retreated to his own bedroom—the first time since the Kennedy White House that a presidential couple had maintained separate rooms," Wolff explains. When reports came out earlier this year Melania "refuses" to share a bed with Trump, the White House vehemently denied them.

5. It's unclear where Melania spends her time, but she's not really ever around. From the Hollywood Reporter excerpt: "With Melania a nonpresence, the staff referred to Ivanka as the 'real wife' and Hicks as the real daughter'" by summer's end, Wolff says.
