Last week, Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes, and her acceptance speech during the ceremony was unforgettable.
In fact, Winfrey brought the audience to its feet with the words, "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up."
So it should be wholly unsurprising that since her empowering and rousing appearance at the Golden Globes, its been frequently suggested that Oprah should run for President of the United States. And last night's Saturday Night Live tackled this topic perfectly.
Leslie Jones appeared as Oprah in the Weekend Update segment of the show, with Colin Jost asking if she really was considering a presidential campaign. With Stedman Graham at her side, the mogul played coy about the possibility of running for president, to begin with anyway. But by the end of the sketch, everyone was convinced that she should definitely run, and that despite being another "celebrity president," she'd probably win.
And as for her nemesis, Oprah said, "There's one thing in my life that's been able to beat me. Bread! All my life I've lost to bread. Please don't make me run against bread!" So relatable.
Winfrey already has the backing of Oscar-winning movie director Steven Spielberg, who told The Guardian, "I think Oprah Winfrey would make an absolutely brilliant president. If she declares, I will back her."
