Unless you've been living under a soundproof rock for the past five years or so, you'll probably know who Ed Sheeran is. You might even know a few of his songs.

After all, it often seems like every other word we hear these days is 'Sheeran'.

Which is why Sir Elton John's surprising pronunciation gaffe at last night's BRIT Awards is one for the ages.

It all began when the legendary Sir Elton began to present the Global Success Award to Ed via video-link.

Although full of praise for his 'dear friend' Ed, fans soon stopped paying attention to what Sir Elton was saying and instead began feverishly deciphering his unique way of saying 'Sheeran'.

'Did Elton John just call him Ed Shiraz?' Alan Carr mused, while another asked: 'Sorry did Elton John just say 'Ed Shurran'?'

A whole host of BRITs viewers were divided over Ed's new name, but one thing's for certain: we will never say 'Sheeran' again.

Because, of course, it goes without saying, when Sir Elton John pronounces your name in a certain way, that's it for life.

As put by Danny Baker: 'Elton John can pronounce Ed Sheeran's name any way he f**king wants. Yours too as it happens.'
