Could Cillian Murphy be the next James Bond? Odds for the actor to succeed Daniel Craig have been slashed this week from 33/1 to 12/1 , although the Irish actor is still not the leading favourite for the coveted role.

Tom Hardy and James Norton are joint favourites, with odds standing at 3/1 for each.

OddsChecker has revealed that a surge of bets on Murphy led to rise in the odds, reports Esquire: 'With the amount of attention we're seeing on Murphy, bookies have had to respond, and his chances of becoming the famous secret agent are increasing more and more by the minute.'

The rise in Murphy rumours could be linked to whispers that Danny Boyle has been approached to direct the next instalment of the franchise. Murphy and Boyle have worked together on two films - 28 Days Later and Sunshine.
