Before confirming the news of his split with Gigi Hadid, Zayn Malik posted a photo on Instagram Tuesday with a caption that gave his followers a big clue about his breakup. But nobody noticed!

At around 1 PM EST, the "Dusk Til Dawn" singer shared a shirtless photo of himself with his 27.3 million followers on Instagram, which he captioned, "When Life throws you lemons, catch em so they don't hit you in the fucking face."

The quote is derivative of the phrase "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade," which is often used as a metaphor for making the most out of a bad situation. The quote should have been the first sign of trouble—and perhaps the sexy thirst-trap image should've signified Malik's new status a single man. Malik also unfollowed his ex earlier today, which is a clear-cut sign of trouble in paradise for any couple.

Two hours after posting the shirtless selfie, Malik and Hadid both squashed any speculation by posting Twitter statements confirming that the relationship is over.

"Gigi and I had an incredible meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," Malik wrote. "She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first."

Hadid shared an equally emotional tweet saying, "Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years .. not only in the relationship, but in life in general. I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared."

Malik and Hadid first started dating in early 2015. The couple briefly broke up and got back together in June 2016.
