From easter eggs to beauty products, there's more choice than ever before when it comes to vegan items. And as the support for plant-based eating continues to rise, supermarkets have started to expand their vegan wine offerings this year.
After the Co-Op announced plans to stock 100 vegan wine products by the end of 2018, Aldi is the latest brand to improve its vegan drinks range.
Why are some wines not vegan? It's worth noting that most wines are clarified with fining agents that are made from animal products, making them unsuitable for a vegan diet.
Aldi now stocks 22 wines in its vegan collection, including award winning reds and whites, a rose, plus four fizzy options. As to be expected at the discount retailer, prices are affordable, starting at under £4 a bottle.
Aldi's eco-friendly Prosecco (£7.99) is one of the stand out products. The previously limited-edition organic bubbly, which is now a permanent fixture in stores, is made without the use of pesticides or herbicides and is best served as an aperitif.
There are three other vegan fizz options to choose from – the Cremant du Jura (£7.99), Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£10.99) and the Contevedo Cava Brut Gold (£4.99). As for the real bargains, look out for the Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc, the Cambalala South African Pinotage and the Toro Loco Spanish Rosé, which are each priced at a very reasonable £3.89 a bottle.
Other highlights include the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée (£8.99) and the Argentinian Malbec (£5.99), which has a fresh, fruity aroma. It sounds like the perfect accompaniment to a tasty vegan feast.
