Meryl Streep on demand

Emma Stone Venice Film Festival 2016

Telly is no longer film's poorer, less attractive cousin. With shows such as Westworld and The Crown enthralling us without asking us to leave the comfort of our sofa, Hollywood is recognising the value of TV acting. Crack open your Filofax and reserve your spot on the settee; we've rounded up the best TV coming up in 2017, starring all your favourite Hollywood actresses.

Meryl Streep

The nineteen time Academy Award nominee and all round overachiever Meryl Streep is set to star in upcoming television series The Nix. Based on the bestselling novel by Nathan Hill, it follows the treacherous relationship between a liberal mother and her estranged author son. With JJ Abrams on board as director, and the company behind Westworld producing, it is already being tipped for success.

The Nix will be released on Netflix, date TBC.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone is about to appear in Oscar bait La La Land.  But she will also be showing up on the small screen, co-starring with Jonah Hill in dark comedy Maniac. If that wasn't enough, it's being directed by Cary Fukunaga, the man behind the wildly successful Hollywood/TV crossover True Detective.

Maniac will be released on Netflix, date TBC.

Elisabeth Moss

Our A-Level English fantasies have come true – Margaret Atwood'sThe Handmaid's Tale is being adapted again for release in 2017. Elisabeth Moss stars as the titular Odwin in this seminal feminist work. The first photos, released this week, show a dark but sumptuous dystopian world that we can't wait to enter (but are also pretty grateful we get to leave).

The Handmaid's Tale will be released on Hulu in April 2017.

Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley

Get three for the price of one, as HBO's Big Little Lies stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley. Based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the new trailer suggests family feuds, catty school mums, with a possible side helping of murder.

Big Little Lies will be released on HBO on the 19th of February.

Naomi Watts

The summary of Naomi Watts' new series Gypsy has got us dying of intrigue. It follows a therapist who becomes intimately involved with the people in her patients' lives. The sexy drama is set to be particularly risqué as Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson directs and produces.

Gypsy will be released on Netflix, date TBC.drew

Drew Barrymore

It may sound like a pre-wedding food plan, but Santa Clarita Diet is actually a new dark comedy starring Drew Barrymore. It revolves around a husband and wife who end up on a path of death and destruction. So it will be interesting so see where the comedy comes from...

Santa Clarita Diet will be released on Netflix, date TBC.
