Gina (Lively) lost her eyesight as a child when she was involved in a tragic car crash that killed her parents. Before the surgery, she depends heavily on her husband James (Clarke), who acts as her "eyes" as he describes what he sees to her.

"I don't remember a moment that we weren't filming," Lively told Vanity Fair. "It was the most intense film I'd ever been on." The actress began filming after giving birth to her second child with husband Ryan Reynolds. Shooting was so grueling that there were days when she filmed for 19 hours straight.
"You just stop sleeping at night," she joked.

To prep for her scenes as a blind woman, Lively experimented with blackout glasses and consulted her own friends with vision impairment. One crew member on set actually underwent the same procedure as Gina did, so Lively consulted with her when getting into character.

Lively suggested that the song her character sings in the film should be incorporated more into the story, so director Marc Forster took note. He had a friend write lyrics that applied to Gina and James' marriage, VF reports.
The actress even recorded the vocals at Babyface's studio, and the singer himself was impressed with Lively's musical talents.

Gina later takes on a new look. The dramatic film also posed some unchartered territory for Lively as an actress when it came to filming a partially nude scene. She usually avoids going naked on-camera, but agreed to do this film after falling in love with the script.
