Have you ever swiped through pictures of a potential Tinder date's profile only to find you've accidentally been a bit too trigger-happy with your thumb and swiped past someone that could've been your soulmate?

Well, then you'll know how devastated Sabryna Salazar must feel right now.

On Friday, the 20-year old student from Texas was watching Michael Phelps compete in the 100m butterfly race only to find her former Tinder match – Joseph Schooling – had beaten the Olympic champion to win gold.

Thinking Schooling looked familiar, Sabryna grabbed her phone and realised she'd matched with the 21-year-old Singapore medallist on Tinder back in April – and had ignored him.

Is there anything more heart-wrenching?

Realising she'd missed out on dating a future gold-medal winning Olympic athlete, Sabryna took to Twitter to express her heartbreak.

Of course, when her mum found out she was less than impressed with her daughter's Tinder faux-pas.

(This mum is all of us right now.)

The lesson here? If your Tinder match looks like they might play sport, you might want to think twice about ignoring them.

Don't worry Sabryna, we're sure there's plenty more fish (or swimmers) in the sea.
