9 Of The Best Alternatives To Pumpkin Carving

From Scandi-inspired designs to pumpkins garnished with flowers, we explore the alternative ways to decorate for Halloween, without the need to carve a pumpkin

Carving pumpkins for Halloween always seems like a good idea.

But once you actually get the surprisingly heavy vegetable home (after dropping it several time on the walk from the bus stop) and rummaging to find your mismatched collection of kitchen knives, it usually takes five minutes for us to get a steak knife stuck into a groove, heave at the smell of raw pumpkin and get those friggin' seeds e.v.e.r.y.where.

There's only so much pumpkin soup a woman can get through in a week, let me tell you.

So this year, we've decided to ditch the tango-coloured ball in favour of carving and decorating far more visually appealing and tasty alternatives.

Carve a pineapple

Pineapples: Small. Healthy. Cool fro'.

Plus, they're so on trend this year so you're actually ahead of the curve. Boom.

Pumpkins filled with flowers

Okay, so this might take a bit of carving but only for the insides. Hollow out the pumpkin and stick your favorite flowers to poke out the top. Festive and pretty!

Carve an avocado

You might have to give up avocado on toast for one day but just look how adorable this little guy is!

Fetch those half-empty paint tins from the garrage and paint various sized pumpkins with black, grey and cream paint before drawing quirky designs on top.

Melted crayon pumpkin

Okay, so if you won't betray the classic pumpkin, why not try melting rainbow-coloured crayons of the top of it? Wack on the hairdryer to see the colors bleed down its bumpy edges, pop on the stairs and voilá, a cool pumpkin (without breaking a sweat).

Slogan pumpkins

Vetements, Alexa Chung, SS17 fashion month – this season it's been all about slogan attire. Translate the trend into Halloween by painting some quirky, pun-filled phrases on your pumpkins and paint them with pastel colours.

Here's some puns to start you off:

  • Boo-tique
  • Trick or treat yo'self
  • If the broom fits
  • Keep calm & carry a wand

Golden fruit and veg

If in doubt, get some gold spray paint and spray the sh*t out of everything you have in the fruit bowl. Add some neon accents and you'll have the cutest little treats in the kitchen this Halloween.

Message on a pumpkin

Grab some metallic-colored pens and start writing seasonal messages on the front of cream paint-coated pumpkins before placing them on your front steps. Your neighbours will be so jealous.

Emoji pumpkins

Forget carving. Get your mates round and have an emoji pumpkin painting evening.

Lame? Nah. How else are we meant to fill these bitterly cold evenings this winter?

Happy decorating!
