As many millennials will know, Hillary Clinton won 54 per cent of votes from voters aged 18 to 29, compared to just 37 per cent who cast ballots for Trump in the presidential election, according to CNN.

While it is a minor comfort in this time of political and social upheaval, it is slightly soothing to know that in a not-to-distant future, a female president will one day be a reality.

But for now, parents across the US are finding ways to encourage young girls (and boys) to continue having hope, championing female empowerment and being courageous at a time when many might see Trump's victory as an attack on gender, race, religious freedom, rights and dreams.

As we have seen this week, the likes of The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin and writer Raakhee Mirchandani have penned emotional letters to their daughters in an attempt to assuage their grief and inspire them to keep fighting for what they believe in.

And the latest parent to try to encourage his daughter's dreams is New England Patriots NFL player, Martellus Bennett, who has written a heartfelt message to his little girl, Jett, about his mission as a father and how she must act in the years to come:

'Daddy how will this affect my future?'

Jett, I'm not totally sure my love. You'll be 7 in four years, you'll be in the 2nd grade. Your mum and I have a lot of work to do. We will continue to teach you How to love, accept others for who they are, think for yourself, help others in need, achieve what the world deem impossible. It's ok for you to color outside of the lines.

I will continue to encourage other kids as well because they'll impact your future directly. The world will one day be all of yours, no time to wait training starts now.

So unfold your arms and reach for the stars because if anyone can touch them it's you. Don't be afraid of your tomorrows, make the most of your todays. Training starts today.
