If you're single, looking for a date or are feeling a bit bored and fancy stretching your thumb muscles this weekend, don't plan anything on Sunday as it's going to be the best day to find a partner all year.

We repeat, don't plan a-n-y-thing.

According to Tinder, Sunday 8 January – otherwise known as 'Dating Sunday' in dating app circles – is the best day to find love for singles as it's the first Sunday of the year when people are on the look out to bag a partner.

Yes, we know New Year's Day was technically the first Sunday of the year but we were too hungover, eating leftovers and sitting with our families waiting for Sherlock to find time to swipe.

In an interview with HelloGiggles, Dr Jess Carbino, a Tinder sociologist (yup, that's a real job) said in the first weeks of a new year, the app expects an increase in downloads – especially on Sunday – which means that there will be plenty more fish to catch and therefore, more chance of finding romance.

Last year alone there was a 10 per cent increase in matches, so prepare yourselves for some serious successful swiping.

She explained: 'Typically we've seen a spike in people joining and using Tinder at the beginning of each year.

'With the close of one year comes new beginnings in the next, and during the last few weeks of the year, people often take time to reflect on their accomplishments, failures, as well as reassess how to improve their lives in the New Year – especially in the romance category,' she added.

Now, let us be the first ones to say that just because you don't have a girlfriend or boyfriend at the turn of a new year does not, in no way, count as a life failure.

However, 'Dating Sunday' does sound like a fun way of meeting new people and the chance to go on a couple of fun dates instead of spending our weeknights wearing pyjamas and curling up on the couch with leftover chocolate this month.

Ahead of Sunday's Swipeathon (get those thumbs nice and stretched, people), Tinder has released a top 10 list of cities that had the most swipes on last year's Dating Sunday.

So, if you're in one of these cities on Sunday, you have a far better chance of bagging a date. Ker-ching!
