There's nothing better than spotting a dopplegänger in public.

I myself have spent many a night pointing out a friend's 'identical twin' or trying to snap a sneaky photo of someone in a bar I think should be in a sequel to The Parent Trap.

Sadly, these moments are rare, but for one Californian college student, it's now become her life.

Last September, 17 year-old Santana Gutierrez came across her own dopplegänger, called Isobel, in a mall.

According to Buzzfeed, the pair met in San Diego when Isobel approached the Las Vegas-born student to talk about the Save the Children fund.

'I kind of felt bad 'cause I wasn't listening to what she was saying — all I was thinking was, "This girl looks exactly like me",' said Gutierrez.

Er, talk about the understatement of the century. Just look at them!

The identical-looking pair laughed about their encounter and exchanged information – I mean, you kind of have to when you meet your carbon-copy – before taking a photo of their chance meeting.

After posting the image on Twitter, Santana started to receive an influx of images of other young women who looked exactly like her.

The tweet has now been retweeted over 24,000 times and has received a staggering 43,000 likes.

Then came the collages.

Last week, Gutierrez received yet another photo, of a Twitter user called Ally Holtt, which encouraged her to ask her parents whether there's something she should know.

'Dad, was I a sextuplet and you didn't tell me', isn't the easiest of questions to ask.

'I showed [the photos] to my dad because everyone said, 'Your parents have some explaining to do,' Gutierrez admitted.

Fortunately for the women, their parents haven't been keeping their familial relations a secret and no, we won't be getting a Parent Trap-style film again anytime soon, but the trio's uncanny resemblance has now resulted in its very own 'doppelgänger ring' and has even caught the attention of Netflix.

The hit series Orphan Black – a thriller about identical people who are clones – tweeted Gutierrez about her uncanny resemblance to women across the world.

Anyone else freaked out?
