Ever since Kristen Stewart starred as high school student Bella Swan in the cult film saga, Twilight, she's been catapulted to super-stardom and better yet, she's stayed there.

From winning a slew of awards, including the BAFTA Rising Star in 2010 and a César for 'Best Supporting Actress' (making her the first American actress to do so), she's also gone on to become the 'face' of Chanel and Balenciaga, made her directorial debut for a short film titled Water and co-authored a research paper on artificial intelligence.

However, in 2012, the actress – who was dating her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson at the time – came under fire following news she'd had an affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, who was married to her Snow White co-star, model Liberty Ross.

The scandal made headlines and, bizarrely, caught the attention of President Donald Trump who tweeted at the time:

As a result, both Sanders and Stewart issued public apologies on the matter, with Stewart admitting she was 'deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment' she had caused.

Meanwhile, the father-of-two admitted he was 'utterly distraught' about what he had done to his family.

However, now the director has spoken out about his brief affair with the Personal Shopper star and vaguely touched on the 'momentary lapse' in his life.

He told Metro: 'You never know what's coming in life. Around every corner there's something unexpected, and that's life. You just have to brush yourself off and continue moving forward the best you can.

'Everyone makes mistakes. I am bound to make more mistakes, and I wouldn't expect my life to be exciting if I didn't ... If you took people off the table for a momentary lapse, there would be no one making art,' he added.

Since the affair, Kristen Stewart has revealed she is actually gay, and has enjoyed several relationships with her assistant Alicia Cargile, French singer Soko and singer St Vincent.

Earlier this year, Stewart – who is currently dating model Stella Maxwell – hosted Saturday Night Live and took the opportunity to reference the affair, her sexuality and Trump's fascination with her love life.

She said: 'The president's probably watching and I don't think he likes me that much. Here's how I know … Four years ago, I was dating a guy named Rob and we broke up and then we got back together, and for some reason it made Donald Trump go insane.

'The president is not a huge fan of me. That is so okay because Donald if you didn't like me then you're not going to like me now because I'm hosting SNL and I'm, like, sooo gay dude,' she added.
