Update 1 June 2017: While they might be two of the most in-demand pop stars of the year, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are finally opening up about the possibility of working on new music together and, sadly, it's not the news we wanted to hear.

During a radio interview with Boston's 103.3 AMP earlier this week, radio host TJ Taormina asked Selena: 'What's up with The Weeknd, Selena – are you guys doing music together?'

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old singer put an end to the rumours once and for all.

'No, no we're not,' she told the presenter. When asked for more details, she added: 'I can't give those people what they want. I'm sorry, and it's not true.'

In the words of Justin Bieber (slightly awkward reference), 'never say never'.

Remember when Selena Gomez and The Weeknd turned up at the Met Gala earlier this month, kissing and snuggling up to each other on the red carpet, and we all thought 'yup, this is the best moment in the couple's relationship history to date'?

Well, hold on to your Calvin Klein sliders people, because there's a rumour going around town (i.e. the internet) that the 24-year-old singer and her Canadian boyfriend are making sweet sweet music together.

I know, right? Mind = blown.

The Wikipedia page of songwriter/producer Max Martin – who has collaborated on tunes for the likes of Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Katy Perry, Usher and Taylor Swift – has given a clue as to Gomez's number one choice when it came to collaborating on her up-coming single, 'In Her Element'.

The page lists Nicki Minaj, Ryan Tedder (of One Republic fame) and Selena Gomez as songwriters on the track but also named – yeah, that's right – The Weeknd as a co-artist.

'In Her Element' (featuring The Weeknd)' reads the caption.

Now, we all know we can't rely on Wikipedia as a source of 100 per cent factual information given the fact that the website's content can be edited by almost anyone, at any time.

However, a musical collaboration would explain why the pair have been so keen to spend so much time with each other during The Weeknd's international tour in recent months, you know, other than the fact they're clearly madly in love with each other.

Perhaps Selena needed to do some last minute vocals with her beau in the studio ahead of the release of her new music, released last Friday?

If news of a potential collaboration between the pair gives us heart palpitations, imagine what a music video of Selena and The Weeknd will do?

I die.
