Rumours have been swirling for a while about Cate Blanchett's next role.

In fact, there's been talk of the Carole star playing legendary comic actress Lucille Ball since 2015.

Now the Australian two-time Oscar Winner has been confirmed to play Ball in a film that has been snatched up by Amazon, no less.

It will be a biopic called 'Lucy and Desi', charting the relationship and business partnership of Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz.

The couple were infamous for their work on I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy and Life With Lucy since 1951.

They had married ten years earlier and went on to have two children.

Though Lucille initially filed for divorce in 1944, she finally went through with the legal separation in 1960, married again and died in 1989.

Ball herself is nothing short of an icon, being Hollywood's most prominent comedic actress of the time, as well as becoming the first woman to run a major television studio.

The film, that has been heralded as a big coup for Amazon, looks like it could focus on their relationship, which was rocky, due to Arnaz's philandering, though eventually concluded with friendship.

Javier Bardem is rumoured to play the Cuban born Arnaz, though this hasn't been confirmed.

The West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin is set to write the film and we can hear the fait ring of Oscar nominations in our ears.

Obviously Twitter had something to say of the announcment.

With some people excited to see what Blanchett would do with the role.

As well as some people thinking Debra Messing or others could play the role better.

We reckon, if Cate can play Bob Dylan, she can probably have a whack at Lucille Ball, the woman has some acting chops.
