Directed by Rian Johnson, Episode VIII follows on from events depicted in JJ Abrams' hugely-successful The Force Awakens which was released in December 2015.

We see Rey training with an alarmed Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), in which he says 'I've seen this raw strength only once before...and it scared me enough then - it does now.'

Elsewhere, there's a BB-8 cameo and two Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) showdowns: one with his mother, General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and the other with Rey in what might be a huge turning point in the film. 'I need someone to show me my place in all this,' she says as Kylo extends his hand, right near the end.

A new poster for the film was also revealed a few hours before the trailer aired:

Hate spoilers? The film's director Rian Johnson took the surprising step of advising those who didn't want to ruin anything from watching the trailer. 'I am legitimately torn,' he wrote on Twitter in response to a fan. 'If you want to come in clean, absolutely avoid it.'

Although, he then appeared to change his mind.

The film will also mark the final appearance of Fisher who died in December 2016.

The trailer's release attracted considerable excitement on social media. Stars War fans obviously had a small meltdown:

Tickets are available to buy now, and the film opens in cinemas worldwide on 15 December.
