Although she'll always be the mighty Arya Stark to us, actress Maisie Williams is already looking forward to a future of making independent films once Game of Thrones has ended.

The 20-year-old actress - who has played Arya in the hit HBO series since she was 14-years-old - said that although the thought of not being in the show is 'nerve wracking', she can't wait to be 'free' to carve out a film career in the UK.

'On one hand, it's really nerve wracking to know that I won't have that support blanket and safety net, but on the other hand I'm free,' the star told Newsbeat at the British Independent Film Awards nominee event.

'I'd love to do a British independent film, I'd love to make it and I'd love to be in it. There are a couple of directors that I'd love to work with - Dexter Fletcher [of Band of Brothers] being one.

'I'd like to just do some work here, for Britain.'

Game of Thrones is heading into its eighth and final season, and although filming hasn't begun yet, the cast have already done their first read-through.

The 20-year-old has been enjoying a a bit of 'downtime' recently before filming starts up again, continuing: 'Anytime I get to work from home, is downtime.

'I think if you stop and do nothing, it drives you insane. Well it does to me anyway. I've been lucky enough to be home for a whole month now, which has been wonderful.'

On her plans post-Game of Thrones, Williams revealed she's following in the footsteps of actress-turned-production company owners Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock for her next project.

'I've just started a production company, so I'm now realising how hard the industry can be.

'Coming back here and listening to all the films nominated and getting back into watching independent films just makes me realise how much I miss it.

'It's the only place I've ever really wanted to be to be honest.'

And to be honest, we'd love you to stay here, Maisie...

The actress is set to follow in GoT co-star (and best friend) Sophie Turner's footsteps by starring in X-Men: The New Mutants.
