Last month, it was announced that Selena Gomez would be performing for the first time after a year's hiatus at this year's American Music Awards 2017.

Obviously, we were all thrilled at the prospect of the actress and singer getting back on that horse after such a difficult year.

It was at the 2016 AMAs that the 25 year-old spoke about her battle with anxiety and depression on stage.

In her brief break she also underwent a kidney transplant and fell in and out of love with fellow singer The Weeknd.

Now, seemingly back with her original love, Justin Beiber, it appeared to be the perfect time for the Texan to take to the stage and show us what she's got.

And it looked like the singer wasn't going to fall short of our expectations. In the run up to last night's performance, she teased us with a sneak peek of her vocals, some erie shots of her dancers and a glimpse at her blonde new 'do.

However, people were less-than impressed with the 'Can't Keep My Hands To Myself' singer during the show, with many speculating that she might have been lip syncing.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their annoyance, though it has not been confirmed that Gomez was definitely lip syncing.

She wore slinky lingerie to perform 'Wolves' and was joined by DJ Marshmello and a group of dancers at the scene of a bloody car crash.

Other fans noticed, however, that she looked particularly down, covering her face and appearing subdued after the performance.

This morning, there have been reports that the singer might have been lip syncing for a very good and also sad reason.

The reason allegedly being because she suffered a panic attack just before she was meant to go on stage.

It's unclear where these rumours are from, but it would explain why the singer might not have been at her best.

Also, considering the high-pressure situation, as well as her personal history with anxiety, it is believable that the performance may have triggered an attack.

Hopefully this won't stop the star from wowing us with a live performance soon, like we know she can.
