Think back to some of your favourite gigs and festivals over the years.

More than likely, a few of your most cherished head-banging moments, sitting atop a stranger's shoulders - pint in hand - has been as a result of the spine-tingling vocals and inimitable guitar riffs from female musicians, including the likes of Ray BLK, Haim and Adele.

So it may come as a surprise to you that Saudia Arabia has only just hosted its first ever concert by a female performer in its history.

On Wednesday, thousands of young women cheered in a standing ovation, with some even removing their abayas - full-length robes local women are required to wear in public - to let their hair hang loose as Lebanese singer Hiba Tawaji took to the stage in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

Introducing the singer, the master of ceremonies reportedly told the crowd: 'This is a very proud moment for Saudi Arabia.

'All women should express their appreciation for a fact that a woman for the first time is performing at a concert in Saudi Arabia.'

During the concert, Tawaji performed Arab classics and covers of Whitney Houston and Céline Dion.

NBC News reports the landmark move to host a female-led public concert appears to be yet another attempt by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to modernise some of the arch-conservative kingdom's practices.

Earlier this year, the Saudi capital hosted a concert by a mixed-gender Japanese classical orchestra with a female lead singer, attended by a mixed-gender audience. It was thought to be the first ever concert in Saudis' history to include female musicians on stage.
