Something is going on in Selena Gomez's world right now.

A week after ringing in the New Year with rumoured boyfriend Justin Bieber, the 25-year-old has just had a major Instagram revamp, which included unfollowing hundreds of friends and celebrities.

A quick look at the singer's Instagram page and you'll see the face of Coach has unfollowed accounts including her assistant Theresa Mingus's, several of her close friends' who she's been seen out or on holiday with, Gigi Hadid's, and Demi Lovato's among others.

Fans noticed Gomez's Instagram activity, with her 'following' list shrinking from 316 to just 37, yesterday afternoon and are somewhat confused.

She's also changed her Instagram icon to a picture of her mother, Mandy Teefey, weeks after the pair unfollowed each other on social media following a bust-up regarding Gomez's romance with Bieber.

However, the 'Bad Liar' crooner still follows several of her fan accounts, and those of Taylor Swift, Amy Schumer, Jessica Alba, her stylist Kate Young, and BFF/kidney donor, Francia Raisa.

The Instagram do-over comes amid a rather sombre post from the star in which she discusses what life might have been like had she not followed stardom.

'The home I grew up in, from birth to 13... (no one was home when I knocked this time lol),' she wrote last night underneath a picture of herself sitting on the front door step of her childhood home.

'I visit this place every chance I get. In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I'm grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don't know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.'

Despite her somewhat confusing Instagram activity in recent hours, it's worth noting that Gomez has previously opened up about the fact she doesn't have the password to her own social media account and her assistant posts on behalf of her on Instagram.

This suggests the unfollowing of several high-profile celebrities might not have been the star's doing but as a result of a wider social media strategy.

'As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,' Gomez said during an interview with ELLE last year.

'It had become so consuming to me. It's what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn't want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn't want to care about. I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I'm kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.'

We're keeping an eye on Gomez's Instagram acccount, don't worry.
