New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced that she is pregnant this morning. The Labour party leader took to Twitter and Instagram to post a heartfelt message about her pregnancy.

Arden, who left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2005 due to her personal views on the support of gay rights, is having her first child with husband Clarke Gayford.

She wrote:

And we thought 2017 was a big year! Clarke and I are really excited that in June our team will expand from two to three, and that we'll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats. I'll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be "first man of fishing" and stay at home dad. I think it's fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn't be more excited. I know there will be lots of questions, and we'll answer all of them (I can assure you we have a plan all ready to go!) But for now, bring on 2018.

This is a first for New Zealand, since a Prime Minister has never given birth in office before, though not a first-ever.

Benazir Bhutto, previous Prime Minister of Pakistan, gave birth to her second child in office in 1990.

That being said, Arden is the youngest female head of government in the world, having taken office last year at 37. She also revealed to the New Zealand Herald that she and her husband found out about the pregnancy two weeks before taking office in October.

Regarding Arden's 'plan', the progressive feminist details in her full statement that she is planning to take six weeks of parental leave.

Though she emphasised the idea that 'women have been having babies for a long time' many people are still heralding this an important moment for gender quality in the workplace, whether women choose to have children or not.

Congratulations to Arden and her husband, we can't wait to meet the little Kiwi in summer.
