Four of the BBC's leading male presenters have agreed to reduce their salaries following revelations of gender pay disparity at the broadcasting corporation.

Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys, Huw Edwards and Jon Sopel have all agreed to pay cuts - 'formally or in principle' - the BBC reports.

It follows the news outlet's China editor Carrie Gracie quitting her role in protest over the gender pay gap, citing an 'indefensible' difference in salaries between men and women.

Confirming her resignation in an open letter, Gracie - who had been at the BBC for 30 years - wrote to the broadcaster's viewers: 'With great regret, I have left my post as China editor to speak out publicly on a crisis of trust at the BBC.

'The BBC belongs to you, the licence fee payer. I believe you have a right to know that it is breaking equality law and resisting pressure for a fair and transparent pay structure.'

The BBC listed the following salaries of those agreeing to a cut below:

  • Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine earned between £700,000 and £749,999 in 2016/17
  • Today programme presenter John Humphries earned between £600,000 and £649,999 in 2016/17
  • BBC News presenter Huw Edwards earned between £550,000 and £599,999 in 2016/17
  • 5 live Breakfast presenter Nicky Campbell earned between £400,000 and £449,999 in 2016/17
  • BBC's North America editor Jon Sopel earned between £200,000 and £249,999 in 2016/17

Last year, the BBC's publication of their annual report revealed that two-thirds of its stars earning more than £150,000 are male.

It was also found that the gender pay gap at the BBC was 9.3%, against a national average of 18.1 per cent.

Chris Evans topped the list with his earnings of £2.2m and £2.25m in 2016/2017, while Claudia Winkleman was revealed as the highest paid female, earning a significantly lower salary of £450,000 and £500,000.

Meanwhile, Gracie will be returning to the BBC, saying she expects to 'paid equally'.
