Michelle Obama's confused-looking face as Melania Trump handed her an unexpected gift on inauguration day swiftly became a meme, but now the former First Lady has finally opened up about what was inside that Tiffany & Co box.
'It was a lovely frame,' Obama said on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, before highlighting that the present was somewhat of a surprise. 'Well, there's all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you're going to do this, they're going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I'm sort of like, okay.'
On the morning of the inauguration, Donald Trump quickly got out of his car at the White House to greet Michelle and Barack Obama, leaving his wife trailing behind holding a blue gift box.
A gif of the moment Melania handed the present to Michelle fast began circulating, as Obama awkwardly looked for somewhere to place the gift before official photographs of the foursome were taken.
'What am I supposed to do with this gift?' Obama recalls thinking. 'And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I'm thinking do we take the picture with [it]?
'And then my husband saved the day – see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out,' continued Obama. 'No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?'
