Perhaps we were secretly hoping for something slightly more romantic - gondola rides in Venice at midnight or helicopter rides over the Louvre - but George Clooney has admitted that he didn't even leave the house - or his laptop - to pursue his wife, Amal.

The 56-year-old Hollywood star has finally revealed how he met his partner during his appearance on Netflix's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

As the actor/director and human rights lawyer probably have quite busy lives and pretty hectic schedules, it makes sense that their paths crossed by chance.

Clooney explained how he was at his Lake Como home - with his parents, no less - when Amal happened to be passing through with a mutual friend.

'A mutual friend of ours said, "I'm stopping by and can I bring my friend?",' Clooney recalled. 'And I was like, "Of course!"'

His agent - who knew the British barrister - immediately called him up to give him some details about her, and even predicted the pair would end up getting married.

'I got a call from my agent who said, "I met this woman who is coming to your house, who you're going to marry",' Clooney continued. 'It really worked out that way.'

The Ocean's Eleven actor and Amal then spent all night talking - despite the awkwardness of his parents being there - before he asked for her email address, and they later started messaging one another.

'The funniest thing was my mom and dad were visiting so my parents were there. And we just talked, we stayed up all night talking,' he recounted. 'And I got her email address, because she was going to send me some pictures of my parents.

'So we started writing. I didn't know if she wanted to go out with me - I just thought we were buddies.'

The two kept in touch via email for weeks until they finally met up again, as Clooney previously disclosed about their modern courtship to The Hollywood Reporter: 'She sent some pictures from when she was here [in Lake Como, and we were writing each other, emailing, talking, mostly about what was going on in each other's lives.

'And over a period of time it became clear we were more than just friends.'

And the rest, as they say is history...

The couple married in Venice in 2014, and are now proud parents to seven-month-old twins, Ella and Alexander.
