Back in 2007, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling revealed that she always envisioned the character of Dumbledore as gay, having fallen in love with a fellow wizard, Grindelwald, who became his nemesis. At the end of the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, we finally met Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp. And after Jude Law was cast as a young Dumbledore, many hoped the next Fantastic Beasts movie would address their romantic relationship. But that's not the case. Entertainment Weekly reports the upcoming sequel won't 'explicitly' acknowledge the wizard's sexuality.
When the magazine asked if Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald makes it clear Dumbledore is gay, director David Yates responded, 'Not explicitly. But I think all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other's ideas, and ideology and each other.'
That revelation got fans of the Harry Potter world upset, as many were hoping to see the romantic ties between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and who were also hoping for some much-needed LGBT representation in the Harry Potter universe.
But this doesn't mean that the topic won't ever come up in the future. J.K. Rowling said at a press conference two years ago that it's likely it will be addressed going forward. 'I can't tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there's lots to unpack in that relationship,' she said, according to EW. 'You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn't always the sage…We'll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned … watch this space.'
