Doctor Dolittle may feel as if its been adapted to death into films and TV series over the years, but now Selena Gomez has hopped on board the cast of The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, we're suddenly very excited.

The 25-year-old singer and actress is set to join an impressive voice cast that so far includes Emma Thompson, Spider-Man's Tom Holland and Ralph Fiennes (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Robert Downey Jr. will play the famous physician who possesses the ability to communicate with animals in the Universal production, which will be directed by Stephen Gaghan.

Michael Sheen and Antonio Banderas will also be starring in live-action roles which have yet to be confirmed.

The story is adapted from the classic 1920s book by Hugh Lofting.

The news of Selena's casting comes following reports that she recently completed treatment for depression and anxiety.

E! News confirmed the news that the star finished a two-week treatment programme for mental health issues, with a source telling the outlet: 'She had a difficult year, especially towards the end, and she decided she wanted to spend some time focusing on herself.'

'It was all about wellness and her health.'

Selena reportedly sought professional help in New York City, months after she unfollowed her mother, Mandy Teefey, on Instagram following rumours the pair had argued over her rekindled romance with Justin.

The Bad Liar singer previously cancelled 34 remaining dates on her Revival world tour in 2016 to seek treatment at a Tennessee facility to help her with anxiety, panic attacks and depression.

Addressing her health while picking up an award for favourite female pop/rock artist at the AMAs two years ago, Selena told the audience: 'I was absolutely broken inside.

'I'm not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say is that from the bottom of my heart I'm so grateful to be able to share what I love every single day with the people that I love.'

We're glad to that Selena prioritised her well-being, and is back feeling healthy and ready to work.
