After Kensington Palace confirmed the news that a new royal baby was on the way in September 2017, we couldn't help but start wondering what Prince William and Kate Middleton will name their third child come its due date in April.

With names like Stormi Webster and Chicago West now out of the running, the bookies are already taking bets on the most likely names for the child, despite its gender not having been revealed yet.

According to Ladbrokes, the royal family are most likely to be welcoming a baby girl.

And while we highly doubt Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be saying 'hello' to a baby Aria, Lola or Rex any time soon (see Netmums' list of top baby names for 2018 for reference), we have a feeling the royal couple might be sticking with tradition and opting for a time-old classic moniker.

Names leading the top spot for a baby girl? Mary has overtaken the name Alice with odds of 7/1, while Victoria follows close behind at 8/1.

The name Mary has been used time and time again in the British monarchy and is even a middle name for Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary).

For a boy, Albert and Arthur lead the charge with odds of 12/1, followed close behind by Frederik and Henry.

The last Albert in the royal family was Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who married Queen Victoria in 1840, and is used as one of Prince Harry's middle names (Henry Charles Albert David).

Here are the bookies' favourite royal baby names:

  • Mary 7/1
