If you thought Friday was going to be a good day, think again.

We've just heard the devastating news that Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have called time on their two-year marriage.

A publicist for the couple told the Associated Press: 'Their split was "mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year".'

The 49-year-old Friends star released a statement via a publicist, who told AP the couple insist they still care very much about each other and will remain friends.

'Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else's fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.'

Aniston and Theroux married in a secret ceremony in Los Angeles in August 2015.

The actress recently celebrated her 49th birthday in Malibu with her closest girlfriends including Courteney Cox. Meanwhile Theroux was spotted in New York City attending Fashion Week.

The couple first met in 2011 on the set of their film Wanderlust.

News of the split comes days after Architectural Digest published a feature about the couple's home in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

In the interview, Aniston is quoted as saying: 'I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there's nowhere else I want to be.'

'I thought he was very sweet and he was always very nice,' Aniston told Pop Sugar in February 2012, six months before Theroux proposed on his birthday.

'But I remember thinking he was very dark. At first you think he could be like a serial killer, but he is actually the nicest person in the world.'

At the time, Theroux was in a long-term relationship with stylist Heidi Bivens.

Aniston was previously married fellow actor Brad Pitt for five years before they divorced in 2005.

Opening up about the split to CBS News in January 2015, the star said: 'I don't find it painful, though.

'I think it's a narrative that follows you because it's an interesting headline. It's more of a media-driven topic.'

Our thoughts go out to the couple during this difficult time.
