You're most likely still fangirling over Saoirse Ronan's performance as a no-nonsense Sacramento teenager in Lady Bird, the newly-released award-winning film directed by Greta Gerwig.

We can count on one hand the amount of films that perfectly portray the awkwardness, weirdness and sheer cluelessness of losing your virginity as a young girl on screen - and Lady Bird really does nail it.

However, the 23-year-old star's latest foray into film is miles away that.

In the new On Chesil Beach trailer, released on Thursday, Ronan stars alongside British actor Billy Howle as a young couple struggling to come to terms with the emotional and physical intricacies of sex in the 1960s.

Of course, this isn't helped by the fact the newlyweds come from vastly different backgrounds: the Irish actress' character Florence is an upper-class violinist who falls for grad student Eddy (Howle).

Cue family arguments, tears and debates about social hierarchy.

Based on Ian McEwan's 2007 novel (11 years after Ronan starred in his critically-acclaimed adapted book Atonement) of the same name, On Chesil Beach chronicles the early days of Eddy and Florence's marriage.

Sounds blissful, right? Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

The pair set off for a honeymoon, where a sexually-motivated Eddy and sexually-terrified Florence come to odds as they are finally confronted with the social pressures of consummating their marriage on their wedding night.

In the trailer, Florence is even seen reading a sexual manual for tips, and tells her husband: 'We can never be happy and it's all my stupid fault.'

In another scene, Eddy screams at his wife on the beach questioning her vows, yelling: 'Have you actually forgotten that we were married today? We're man and wife, that's what you promised.'

A raunchy, sex-filled trip to the seaside this is not.

Jezebel argues McEwan would've been better off renaming the plot Here, Have a Panic Attack Thinking About Trying to Have a Sexually Fulfilling Life in the 1950s.

And, from the looks of things, they're not far off the mark.

If the memory of losing your virginity makes your cringe, this film will make it seem like a scene from The Notebook.

On Chesil Beach is out on 18 May.
