Five Minutes with Kate Hudson

On keeping fit, healthy and motivated

We literally had five minutes with Kate Hudson this week to talk about the launch of the fitness range Fabletics that she has co-founded. See what she said here...

So why did you want to co-found Fabletics? Did you feel like something was missing?

It was a number of things. There was a hole in the market for affordable athelete-wear. Affordable meaning where our climate is right now, so women could feel like they could purchase something without breaking the bank. It’s more fashion-forward, more hip, and it’s also online.

What are your favourite pieces? Do you have a work-out outfit?

Most of the time I wear shorts, or I wear a running leg or capri. And I’ll wear a seamless sports bra, when that seamless idea came out it was like a dream come true, so we do a lot of seamless. I like little sports bras because when I work out I don’t like anything constricting me.  I also wear vests, and all different kinds of shirts depending on the weather.

What’s your diet like?

I try to have a green juice every day. It’s such a shame that they’re so expensive everywhere you go. Making them at home is the best investment for people into that stuff. The truth is, if you get kids started on green juices early with apple they love it. That’s what my mum did with us – we never thought juice was gross because we were always drinking it. Once you see what goes into it, you don’t think it’s gross but actually kinda cool.

What are your favourite exercises?

Pilates and dance.

We hear you're a fan of the Brazilian butt-lift?

Oh yeah (laughs) that’s a DVD. By the way, it’s the greatest workout. It’s really hard. [Leandro Carvalho's] really great. It’s Latin-Brazilian dance-based. But it’s all about the butt and the core. When I go away I take him [the DVD’s} with me now.

Did you do that in the run-up to Glee? Because your figure in Glee was amazing.

I was doing a lot of dancing then and a lot of Pilates. I always kind of do the same stuff.

What motivates you to exercise?

There are a couple things: music, my friends. My friends are huge motivation, especially when a friend is like in it and doing it, and so happy like, ‘Oh I’m doing Soulcycle’ and they’ve lost a couple pounds, and you’re like ‘I wanna go with you’.

And what songs motivate you?

Music in general is motivating to me. It depends on what I’m doing that day and how I’m working out. For some reason I like running to Arcade Fire. When I’m working out lifting weights, which is so important for women, and running – Aerosmith. I love dancing to hip-hop.

What fitness challenge would you most like to do?

I want to do a triathlon.
