It used to be easy to not work out; lack of time, expensive gyms, feeling intimidated by the gym selfie mafia - they all seemed like perfectly good reasons to never have to put your body through the stress of getting into a sports bra.
But with so many home workouts and fitness apps out there now, even your excuses need excuses for not working up a sweat every now and then.
There’s never been a better time to work on your fitness and build your confidence in the comfort of your own home.
Here are some of my favourite at home sweat fests:
This is the big daddy of all home workouts. Push your couch out of the way, warn your neighbours they may hear you screaming swear words and brace yourself for some serious sweat. This is a 60-day workout plan that increases in both intensity and utter insanity as the weeks roll on. While I wouldn’t recommend it for complete fitness novices (it helps to have at least a base fitness level with this), if you’ve been lacking motivation, putting exercise off, or just unable to come up with a workout you like, this is sure to give you the ass kicking you need. It comes with a nutrition plan and a handy calendar for you to tick off the days you complete (which, trust me, feels like a major achievement).
(WARNING: Insanity is MUCH harder than this)
These are great YouTube workouts put together by trainer Cassey Ho. You can blast your full body or target individual areas with little to no equipment. Some of these take just 10 minutes, so all those excuses you make about not having time to workout kinda get blown out of the water. Once you get more confident with the moves, you can start piecing together some of the workouts to build a longer session for yourself.
Another great YouTube channel and this one offers a whole lot of variety. Whether you’re looking for a blast of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), a Yoga workout, dance session or just want to be put through your paces by celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels, this channel has got you covered. A few workouts require very minimal equipment, but most don’t need any. This is a real one-stop shop for all your sweaty needs.
If Yoga’s your thing, this is the channel for you. Tara Stiles is Yoga powerhouse from New York and she offers some great content on this channel to help you with your yoga practice. I’m pretty useless at yoga, so it’s good to use these videos to get to grips with a basic yoga flow before throwing off all the pros in a yoga class with my avant-garde style. Stiles offers yoga workouts aimed at what you may be looking for specifically too, such as energy, strength and focus, productivity, stress busting. Namaste, people.
This great app by nutritionist Madeline Shaw offers a holistic way to get into fitness, so if you’re just starting out on your sweat journey, this is well worth a download. It’s an eight-week programme that’s like having a personal trainer, nutritionist and life coach right there in your pocket. Enjoy meal plans, yoga workouts, strength and cardio sessions and daily meditations. Plus you get to be part of the community on Glow Guides and get to see how all the other users are doing - perfect for all the support and encouragement you need to keep you going.
