Want to discover the new Jessie Burton or Paula Hawkins before everyone else? ELLE's literary editor Anna James highlights the new voices to look out for this year.More
Rachel B Glaser - Paulina and Fran (Granta)
Glaser’s sharp, dark story of female friendship is very funny and sometimes uncomfortably familiar. She’s brilliantly insightful on the rivalries but also intense affection between close female friends, not to mention women’s relationship with their hair. Sure to appeal to fans of Emma Jane Unsworth’s raucous but warm Animals.
Rebecca Mackenzie - In a Land of Paper Gods (Tinder Press)
If you like your novels lyrical but pacy look out for this beautiful debut which offers a refreshingly different perspective on the Second World War. Heroine Etta is a witty but conflicted girl growing up in a boarding school for the children of missionaries in China whose life is pulled apart by a horrible accident and then the onset of the war.
