Twin Peaks is coming back for a third series – 25 years after the dark original was axed from our screens.

Originally aired in 1990, it centred on a small American town in the aftermath of the murder of teenage homecoming queen Laura Palmer.

Since its cancellation, the show has built quite the cult following. It's often referenced (red velvet curtain, anyone?), not just in TV and film, but in fashion, too. Catherine Martell's graphic-print blanket coat versus for a/w 2014, perhaps? The Miss Twin Peaks contestants decked out in plastic raincoats? See the in their coloured macs. And as for the character Audrey Horne – today, she'd be a girl, through and through.

David Lynch will direct and co-write (along with original writer Mark Frost) the nine-episode series, which will be set in the present day.

And while the cast (and costume designer) have yet to be confirmed, with Lynch at the helm, it's sure to generate enough bizarre, brilliant references to last us another 25 years.
