As the year draws to a close, one thing we can solidly depend on is that there WILL be a John Lewis Christmas ad, and it WILL be an emotionally draining roller coaster of a watch (see last year’s one here). This year is certainly no different – meet #MontyThePenguin.
The ad starts with an adorable friendship with a young boy and his real-life fluffy penguin, Monty. And as the two frolic and play, the young boy soon comes to realise (as does the stricken viewer) that all that Monty longs for is love.
In true John Lewis fashion, the advert is soundtracked with a heartrending cover by a contemporary artist – this year, it’s Tom Odell with his version of John Lennon’s Real Love.
