When Apple releases a new product, the tech-forward world goes into overdrive. Add into the mix the fact that the Apple Watch has been so long in coming and you have a bona fide frenzy on your hands (or, ahem, wrist).

But is it worth the hype? We took it for a test-wear ahead of its 24 April release date and discovered five key things you need to know…

1.The Apple Watch comes in three different variations: a sports version, a smarter version and the £15,000 gold whopper version.

2.You can customise the actual face of your watch to appear as pretty much anything you like – as often as you like.

3.To turn it on, you simply raise your wrist. It turns off in the same manner. (We tried tested this countless times to try and catch it out, and we did not succeed).

4.The health and fitness app on the watch is quite incredible. You can set yourself daily challenges of calories to be burned and it will nudge you (literally) if you are falling short. It monitors your heartbeat, counts your steps and even tells you how long it will take to burn off the Five Guys you ate at lunch.

5.The best part is the all-singing, all-dancing emojis that are specific to the watch. Plus, you can actually send your own heartbeat to someone – they'll feel it pulse against their wrist in sync.

The ELLE verdict: Start prepping your tent. That queue is going to be lethal.
