As first world problems go, it’s definitely one of the most frustrating, but the reason your phone battery is dying before lunchtime might finally have been answered and the finger is being pointed at Facebook.

Last week, users of the Facebook app on iPhone noticed that it appeared to be draining more power from the battery than usual. After looking into what was going on in the app, it was found that Facebook seemed to be using tricks like playing silent audio so that the app wouldn’t close — but users wouldn’t be aware that it was happening.

Facebook admitted that it was responsible for people experiencing battery issues with their phones. The network’s engineering manager Ari Grant announced a few 'key issues' had been found, including a 'CPU spin' - me neither - and the way app was dealing with audio.

So how do you fix it?

Facebook recommends you update to their newest version of the app, which supposedly solves the problem.

You can also track what apps are draining your battery the most by checking out the ‘battery’ section in your iPhone’s General settings.

A few other battery life tips include:

• Set your phone to low power mode. This is a new Apple iOS 9 feature, which will temporarily reduce power-hungry features like Siri.

• Maximise your auto-lock time. Manually use the sleep/wake button rather than having it lock automatically after 60 seconds.

• Disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and location services until you really need them.

• Turn off vibrate.

• Minimise app notifications. Often we just allow push notifications, which keep these apps constantly running in the background.
