If you were asked to think of the most popular song on Spotify, what springs to mind? Thriller by Michael Jackson? Baby by Bieber? Something by Queen B? Well you're wrong! You're all wrong!

The most streamed song on Spotify was released earlier this year, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj both turned it down, it didn't top either the US or UK charts and it was released on an indie label.

And the name of that song? We'll put you out of your misery, it's Lean On, by Major Lazer & DJ Snake featuring MØ and it now has more than 526m plays worldwide, according to Spotify, overtaking Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran.

Released on Mad Decent in the US and Because Music in Europe Lean On reached No 4 in the US and No 2 in the UK after its release in March, although it did top charts in other countries.

In an interview with the Evening Standard earlier this year, Diplo, the producer and DJ who makes up Major Lazer along with Switch, spoke about Rihanna turning down the summer hit:

'I was in the studio with Rihanna, still playing the game. I was trying to convince her why she should do so-and-so, and thinking, ‘Lean On is bigger than any of her songs around the world right now. Why am I even sitting here trying to negotiate?’

Looks like you dropped the ball on that one RiRi.
