Kate Middleton honoured Princess Diana last night by wearing her favourite tiara to the Queen’s Annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.

The Lovers’ Knot tiara looked stunning on Kate, and it was a particularly poignant styling choice. The tiara was favoured by Princess Diana, after it was passed down to her by the Queen in 1981 as a wedding gift.

The family heirloom was originally commissioned by the Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1914 and features swinging pearls hanging from 19 diamond arches capped with lovers' knot bows.

The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her relaxed attitude to fashion and style. She’s often seen wearing high street clothing and rarely wears such finery. In fact, she has only worn a tiara three times prior to last night’s royal affair; on her own wedding day and to two important state dinners.

Kate paid homage to her late mother-in-law and the grandmother of her two children – George and Charlotte – in the most elegant way and it has melted our hearts.
