Is nothing sacred!?  Hipster food fads are now threatening to infiltrate the confectionery institution that is Cadbury’s Milk Tray, as kale and beetroot- flavoured chocolates are in development. While this might come as sweet relief to the vegetable-spiralising, green juice-drinking wellness junkies of the world, the rest of us are left wondering where this disturbing trend will end (Kale: stay away from my Quality Streets).

Milk Tray made its first nod to contemporary tastes earlier this year when the ‘artisan’ salted caramel usurped the more humble truffle. Fellow chocolate box stalwart the Turkish delight was another recent casualty, having been replaced by an Apple Crunch (this lady does not love the sound of that combination).

In an effort to explain this madness to fashion people, who despite appearances really do not like change, Dave Shepherd, head of research and development at Milk Tray, said: 'The clothes you see on the catwalk never appear as they are on the shelves. Instead you see things inspired by it a little bit down the line […] we are looking at flavour trends.'

Hmmm, well the Milk Tray man was always a fashion icon, sporting a black poloneck, jeans and natty leather gloves while breaking into women’s homes to deliver them a box of chocolates in a totally unthreatening and actually very sexy sort of way.

But it’s not just the flavours that are working through change at the moment. The search is on for a new Milk Tray Man and auditions are taking place nationwide. Though quite frankly even if Idris Elba climbed through our bedroom window with a box of kale and beetroot flavoured chocolates, we’d throw them in his face.
